With the Dogwood Festival and Parade taking place in Phoenixville this time of year, let’s learn about the beginnings of the event with this week’s local history lesson from our friends at the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area. Their website is linked in the comments if you would like more information about what they do, and how you can help. Enjoy!

The Dogwood Parade and Festival started in 1943 as a war bond drive effort for World War 2. One of the fundraisers that citizens could do was to purchase a dogwood tree sapling. Those saplings were planted all around town and exist in backyards everywhere. Here’s a great photo from the parade in 1966 along Main Street of the YMCA float. This years parade will have over 120 individual participants, and is expected to be one of the biggest Dogwood parades in its 76 year history.
